Historical Event
All Aboard the History Express!
Manitou Springs, CO - (July 24, 2011) – Join train enthusiasts and history buffs on the History Express Sunday, August 21st. All aboard at 3:40 p.m. for a 4:00 departure on the world famous Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway for the trip to the top of Pikes Peak…and back!
Passengers will be transported to 1911 when the sites along the Cog Route were very different than they are now. Hear about Mr. and Mrs. Skinner – who froze to death on America’s mountain exactly 100 years ago to the day and learn about the places and people they would have encountered in their ill-fated, and unsuccessful, trip to the summit as the train stops at key locations on the return trip. Conductor of the History Express will be well-known train historian Mel McFarland and special guest speaker on the Skinner incident will be Pikes Peak Library District Special Collections Manager, Tim Blevins.
Proceeds from the History Express excursion will support the Manitou Springs Heritage Center, which has been operating only two years. Tickets are $60 per person, and $100 per couple; individual tickets for Historic Manitou Springs, Inc. are $50 each. In addition to the Cog ride, tickets include a booklet full of historic photos and information highlighting the features of the trip, a gourmet snack box filled with delectable treats, a commemorative poster, and a unique, reusable gift bag.
Come join the fun 1911-style! For tickets or information, and to find out more about the Manitou Springs Heritage Center, please visit us at 517 Manitou Avenue, or log on to our website at www.manitouspringsheritagecenter.org.
